Convention Center
Convention Center Area Strategic Development Plan Final Meeting, 07/13/04
By Alex Padro
Jul 9, 2004, 14:43

The fourth and final public meeting regarding the Office of Planning's Convention Center Area Strategic Development Plan will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Heritage Hall in Shiloh Baptist Church's Henry C. Gregory III Family Life Center, 1510 9th Street, NW.

The meeting will being with a recap of the planning process and draft recommendations by the consultants hired by the Office of Planning to prepare the study, followed by poster presentations of different aspects of the plan, including housing, retail, and public realm issues.

Following the meeting, the draft plan recommendations will be posted on the Office of Planning's website for an extended comment period, scheduled to end on September 30, 2004, to allow the public and community groups enough time to review the plan and submit written comments.

There are a number of events taking place in our community that night, but please make an effort to stop by and at least see the poster boards if you can't be present for the presentations at the beginning.

While there are elements of the plan that are desirable, there are concerns. Examples of such concerns include the suggestion that Kelsey Gardens Apartments be replaced by higher density housing, which our community is opposed to, as well as redevelopment of the Seaton Elementary School field, and the recommendation not to change the zoning for the 1500 block of 9th Street, NW, to C2A, which would facilitate reestablishment of retail on the block to support and benefit from the future Carter G. Woodson National Historic Site there.

Please take the time to carefully look at the boards and recommendations and ask questions about anything that is unclear. Our neighborhood's future and our quality of life here may well depend on what is ultimately included or left out of this plan.

More information on the planning process, as well as materials on and comments from the previous meetings, can be viewed online at www.planning.dc.gov/planning/cwp/view,a,1285,q,595248,planningNav,|32341|.asp
