Watha T. Daniel Library
This afternoon, in a meeting in Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans' office, City Administrator Robert Bobb committed to funding a 24,000 square foot replacement for the current Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library. The necessary funding will be reprogrammed to allow the full-size library's design and construction to proceed. "We're going to give the community what it wants," Bobb told Evans.
The Shaw community was outraged when it learned that the DC Public Library planned to replace it's 29-year-old, 24,000 square foot building with a new structure less than 2/3 the size. A 14,000 square foot building would mean the loss of the library's basement, and a reduction in the amount of meeting space, a critical commodity in Shaw. The concern was so widespread that the community was considering rejecting the 14,000 square foot building.
Bobb's commitment to fund the replacement of Shaw's library with its full square footage is an important step in ensuring our community is strengthened, not diminished, by the development that is occuring here. Preliminary architectural drawings for the first and second floors and the exterior of the new library are now on display on the first floor at Watha T. Daniel/Shaw. Please stop by to look at the plans and provide comments to me at PadroANC2C@aol.com.
Please join me in thanking Councilmember Evans for his continued advocacy on behalf of Shaw, and for his work in ensuring that our community was not shortchanged with a smaller library.
Also, please email or call City Administrator Bobb to thank him for his commitment to build a full 24,000 square foot replacement for the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library. You can contact him at robert.bobb@dc.gov or 202-727-6053.
